A good defensive shortstop with
speed, Dick Jones led the Kitty League in fielding percentage (.932)
in 1940 and was the top base stealer in 1939 and 1940. He was a key
member of the 1938 and 1940 postseason champion Jackson Generals.
The local sportswritter dubbed him "Gilland's Gift to the
Gals" for his boyish good looks. (Hartle Gilliand was the club
owner.)
